Irene Hammell was entirely
schooled in the Catholic education system. She graduated cum laude from the
University of Detroit. Then completed 24 hours of postgraduate
work.
Irene writes:
"While taking classes at U of D, I met my
future husband, whom I cherish to this day. For nearly ten years, I taught in
the Detroit Public Schools. During this period, I also had the opportunity to
develop and oversee a primary remedial math lab.
Then, suddenly, my life
changed. I started a family. Of course, I had my husband to thank for this. Two
children and some years later, I joined the staff of Macomb Reading Partners, a
literacy program in Macomb County. Next, I started to substitute teach both in
the public and parochial school systems. Prior to accepting a teaching position
at Guardian Angels School, I taught at Holy Innocents in Roseville, and then at
St. Veronica’s in Eastpointe. Both are now closed.
With the coming of the
new millennium, I got lucky. I won a contest promoted by WNIC radio station and
sponsored by Meijer’s. I was selected The Teacher of the Year in 2000.
The following year, I compiled the First Annual Guardian Angels
Anthology. This book provides an opportunity for students to showcase their
written work. This year there are expectations for printing the Seventh Annual
Guardian Angels Catholic School Anthology. Work promotes progress. However, life
is not always fair. I keep repeating the fifth grade!"

haloes...well...OK...so they HAVE fallen off a couple of times. Daniel and
Patrick attended Guardian Angels for 5 years until I moved to Oxford 12 years
ago. This summer I moved back down to Madison Heights and I am looking forward
to sleeping an extra half hour every morning. My long time dream is to someday
move to Australia. Until then, I will continue to enjoy and love all my
"bunchkins" in the Academy! E-mail address-dunhamb@gaschool.com
